Como

Como is a warm, predominantly residential neighborhood within the University community. Much like the many trees and community gardens that saturate Como, many young families tend to grow here, too.

Not to be confused with the Como neighborhood in St. Paul (which is the location of the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory), Como in Minneapolis is a rich living community tucked below the Mid-city Industrial neighborhood. Its boundaries are East Hennepin Avenue to the north, 33rd Avenue Southeast to the east, the Southeast Industrial Area to the south and the main thoroughfare that is Interstate 35W to the west.

As far as tight-knit, yet welcoming communities go, it doesn’t get any homier than Como. The busy roads, industry and active railroads that surround Como contrast with the residential character of the neighborhood. Van Cleve Park and Community Center is found here along with the Como Student Community Co-op and a slew of small businesses, including a hardware store, a barber, coffee houses, a few bar/restaurants and several auto repair garages. The housing in Como is mostly modest early 20th-century bungalows and twenties-era homes mixed with a scattering of newer duplexes and single family homes. There are also a few post-60's two-story walk-up apartment buildings.

In keeping with the general feel of community and social awareness in Como, the neighborhood was recently awarded a $120,000 grant to implement a Green Village concept that will focus on green transportation, renewable energy and overall sustainability. New community gardens, an organic lawn care program, clothesline give-aways, building rain barrels and a Solar Pilot Project are part of this concept.
