Kenwood is one of Minneapolis’ most affluent neighborhoods and is part of the greater Calhoun-Isles community. Primarily residential, it offers residents only a few establishments to frequent, including fine dining at The Kenwood and shopping at Birchbark Books. Quiet and prestigious, the neighborhood attracts affluent and middle age residents who want to live close to Uptown, Downtown, and the parks and lake systems.
Kenwood Neighborhood Boundaries
Kenwood’s is bordered by Kenwood Parkway to the north, West Lake of the Isles Parkway to the east, Kenilworth Place to the south, and Cedar Lake Parkway to the west. It’s also nestled between Lake Calhoun, Lake of the Isles and Cedar Lake, an area that boasts the largest concentration of upscale homes in Minneapolis and some of the most unique cultural attractions the city has to offer.
Kenwood Neighborhood History
The community began in the late 1880s after the city of Minneapolis acquired the land. Located just outside the city limits, its amenities included a rail line, depot and hotel. Once housing development began, the area became lush with elegant single-family homes in popular architectural styles of the time, including Mediterranean and colonial. Over time, many large homes were divided up into apartments and duplexes, which were later converted back to single-family use.
Kenwood Neighborhood Landmarks
The neighborhood is home to several of the city’s more famed landmarks. Built in 1910, the Kenwood Park Water Tower is an octagonal brick and stone structure that’s 110 feet tall, making it the tallest building in the community. Dubbed the “Mary Tyler Moore House,” three homes on the 2200 block of W. Lake of the Isles Parkway were the site of the popular TV show of the same name.
Other historical landmarks include the Peavy Plaza Fountain, Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church, and a small commercially-zoned area near Penn Avenue South.
Kenwood Neighborhood Activities
Situated in the northern part of the neighborhood, Kenwood Park is a beautiful green space with irregular topography, sloping hills, plenty of trees, and sunset views overlooking nearby lakes. Summer months bring baseball, tennis and soccer games to the park, while winter brings skating and skiing.Biking and walking enthusiasts can enjoy the Kenwood and Grand Rounds trails, which partially follow the Lake of the Isles shoreline.
There is plenty of family fun to be had in Kenwood, too. Located within the park is the Kenwood Community Center, which offers kids and parents lots of outdoor activities to choose from. It’s connected to Kenwood Elementary School, which provides space for daytime recreation.
