Warehouse District

Called the Warehouse District from the city's shipping hub years. It is located within the North Loop and is undeniably the epicenter of all things “cool”. Famed for housing some of the oldest standing buildings in the city, the community is characterized by its variety of commercial, industrial and residential uses. It has grown to become the leading arts and entertainment neighborhood in Minneapolis, and there is no shortage of hip, fun and active things to do here.

Warehouse District Neighborhood Boundaries

The Warehouse District includes Downtown West and some sections of North Loop. The neighborhood is bounded by Second Street and Washington Avenue to the north, First Avenue North to the east, Sixth Street North to the south, and both Second and Third avenues to the west.

Warehouse District Neighborhood History

A large area of the Warehouse District has been recognized by and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Rich with art, culture and history, the neighborhood was a major jobbing center and hub of bustling warehouse activity in the early 20th Century. Today, many of these once-abandoned, high-rise warehouses have been converted into modern urban living and work spaces.

Warehouse District Neighborhood Landmarks

Architecturally speaking, the warehouses themselves represent the neighborhood’s historical landmarks. The original buildings showcase the changes in popular commercial styles from over the decades, such as Italianate, Queen Anne, Richardsonian Romanesque and Classical Revival. The district’s representation of changes in architectural tastes makes it quite unique from bordering communities.

Warehouse District Neighborhood Activities

A major draw of the Warehouse District is its proximity to some of the best happenings in Minneapolis. Residents are within walking distance to downtown, the Mississippi River, Target Field, Nicollet Mall, upscale restaurants, theaters, galleries, nightclubs and much more. Not only is there something for everyone nearby, but residents looking to green their commute will be happy to know there is no need to own a car while living here.
