Linden Hills

Known for its tree-lined streets and family appeal, Linden Hills is a charming neighborhood adjacent to two of Minneapolis’ largest lakes. It features craftsman-style homes, walkable commercial districts, and a bike path connecting residents to Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet. From leisurely activities and events to restaurants and shops, there is a little bit of everything in this beautiful lakeside village.

Linden Hills Neighborhood Boundaries

Linden Hills is an affluent community nestled in Southwest Minneapolis. It is bordered by Lake Calhoun and West 36th Street to the north; Lake Harriet and William Berry Parkway to the east; West 47th Street to the south; France Avenue and the city of Edina to the west.

Linden Hills Neighborhood History

Linden Hills was aptly named after its beautiful linden trees and gentle hills. Lakeside cottages were the first housing developments to go up in this area. This “cottage city” was intended to draw homeowners away from Downtown Minneapolis and to this new urban oasis. Towards the late 19th century, however, most of these early cabins were torn down and replaced with single-family homes. The neighborhood features a range of architectural styles, including many pre-WWII designs.

Linden Hills Neighborhood Landmarks

Linden Hills is home to two very distinct landmarks. Built in the 1920s, the Como-Harriet Streetcar Line was once a main mode of transportation for commuters heading to work, school or shopping. Today, it is operated by the Minnesota Streetcar Museum. During summer months, residents can go for an old school trolley ride along the surviving section of this historic line, which runs between Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun.

The Lake Harriet Bandshell is located on the edge of the lake’s picturesque shoreline. It has a rather interesting backstory—the building is now in its fifth generation. The first three bandshell buildings were destroyed by the elements (twice by fire, then by wind). The fourth was demolished and reconstructed by the city in 1985. On summer evenings, residents can head to the main platform and enjoy live music during the Minneapolis Music in the Parks outdoor concert series.

Linden Hills Neighborhood Activities

There is much to do and see in this active lakeside community. Linden Hills’ commercial corridor offers plenty of specialty shops and restaurants for urban villagers to choose from, including Wild Rumpus Bookstore, Creative Kidstuff Toy Store, Sebastian Joe’s Ice Cream Café, The Zumbro Café and Tilia.

The neighborhood’s proximity to two major lakes provides lots of recreational opportunities, including running, biking, swimming, windsurfing, canoeing and parasailing. Seasonal events include outdoor concerts, Sunday farmer’s markets, movies in the park, and an annual block party.
